Hospitals

Another query that has been on my mind is: Are there ways to make hospitals cheaper and more efficient? What effect would this have on health care?

Hospitals seem, at least to me, very spread out and confusing. How many times have you gotten lost trying to find someone in a hospital? Does this affect the performance and cost of hospitals? What architectural improvements could be made to future hospitals to make hospitals more efficient?

Furthermore, should hospitals be considering more “green” options? How much money would a “green” hospital save?

And what does a Hospital’s budget sheet look like in general? I wish you could see a complete breakdown of a hospital visit to see how much it cost. What expenses do hospitals have? Perhaps:

  • Travel expenses (ambulances). The gas (do hospitals have hybrids?), drivers, medics, etc.
  • Energy costs (green hospitals). Heating, lighting, air-conditioning, running medical equipment, water.
  • Sanitation. Cleaning crews, cleaning supplies, clothing, etc.
  • Medication. Pharmacists, cost of medication in general, delivery.
  • Food. Have to feed you, clean dishes, cook food, run a cafeteria.
  • Insurance.
  • Equipment. Have to purchase new equipment (new machines, etc), basic medical supplies (syringes, bandages, etc).
  • Personnel. Nurses, doctors, security, reception, mechanics, computer techs, accountants, record keeping, etc.
  • Cost to treat people that don’t have insurance/cannot pay. Has to be some kind of expense for free clinics, etc.

And this all depends on how long you have to stay in a hospital for monitoring and things like that. How can these expenses be limited? What cost saving changes can we make?
